
The Malaysia Plan is a 5-year Malaysian government national development initiative. The 5-year plan is a legacy from British colonial rule in Malaya after the Second World War.
The 5-year plan began with the First Malaya Plan, from 1956 to 1960. This initiative was continued with the Second Malaya Plan from 1961 to 1965. After the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the 5-year plan has been converted to the Malaysia Plan (MP) with the First Malaysia Plan which began in 1966 until 1970, the difference being that the economic plan now included the entire nation – including Sabah and Sarawak, as opposed just Peninsular Malaysia.
First Malaya Plan: 1956 – 1960
Increasing economic development to increase per capita income and living standards. More focus is directed towards those low-income earners living in rural areas with such projects as building and improving basic facilities and diversifying agricultural production.
Second Malaya Plan: 1961 – 1965Improving the economy to maintain living standards through diversification of the economy and product development other than rubber.
First Malaysia Plan: 1966 – 1970
The First Malaysia Plan was the a development plan which encompassed Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, with the aim of cultivating social integration amongst the people of various states in Malaysia, improving economic growth and the welfare of the people. The New Economic Policy, which was drafted by the National Action Council (MAGERAN) to create national unity through the eradication of poverty irrespective of race.

Second Malaysia Plan: 1971 – 1975
New Economic PolicyTo create the political will and capacity to ensure the success of the New Economic Policy objectives to reduce poverty and to restructure society in order to create national unity. This plan concluded with the ending of the global economic recession in 1974-1975.

Third Malaysia Plan: 1976 – 1980
Recovery period. The role of industry was expanded to achieve the New Economic Policy through the modernization of the agricultural sector and the expansion of labour-intensive industries.

Fourth Malaysia Plan: 1981 – 1986
5Inflation in the early 1980s adversely affected overall economic growth. The role of the private sector was given priority in the implementation of the New Economic Policy.

Fifth Malaysia Plan: 1986 – 1990
The government implemented a stable strategy of development. The private sector became the catalyst for economic growth, particularly in the growth of heavy industries and natural resource-based activities.

The most obvious focus in the nation's macroeconomic strategy is to strengthen is production capacity and international competitiveness.

Seventh Malaysia Plan: 1996 – 2000
The key driver in this plan is the shift from development based on input to one based on productivity to increase output, a more substantive transformation and balanced development.

Eighth Malaysia Plan: 2001 – 2005
Three key drivers in the Eighth Malaysia Plan is to transform the nation's growth strategy from one based on input to a growth model which is knowledge driven to increase output growth potential, to accelerate changes in the structure of the agricultural, manufacturing and services sector as well as to strengthen socio-economic stability through equitable distribution of income and the country's wealth.

Ninth Malaysia Plan: 2006 – 2010
The Ninth Malaysia Plan, which aims to create prosperity, is one of the most important Malaysia Plans in the country's history as the country is at the halfway point in its journey towards the year 2020. This plan encompasses an amalgamation of government initiatives to create a nation with a developed economy, a balanced social development, with a citizenry which is united, cultured, of good character, one that is knowledgeable and forward-thinking.
